Warriors golfers in eighth

The Hawaii men’s golf team finished the first day of the Western Athletic Conference championships in eighth place at the Rio Secco Golf Club yesterday.

Freshman Nainoa Calip led the Warriors with a 2-over 74, sitting in a tie for 14th place. The Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate and Hilo native recovered after bogeying three of his first seven holes to shoot 1 under over the final 11 holes.

Fresno State leads the nine-team tournament at Henderson, Nev., with an even-par 288; Hawaii enters today’s final round with an aggregate total of 308.

Moore advances to quarters

Punahou graduate Carissa Moore advanced to the quarterfinals of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic at New South Wales, Australia, earlier today.

Moore, 18, ranked No. 2 in the ASP, posted a 19.25 score, tops in her third-round heat off Dee Why Point to advance in the richest event on the 2011 women’s world tour circuit.

Hawaii natives Coco Ho and Melanie Bartels are also in the hunt to make the quarterfinals. Ho posted a 13.50 in her third-round heat, while Bartels posted a 14.50 to set up fourth-round single-elimination matchups.
