Maui motorcyclist dies after hitting tree

A motorcycle crash killed a 28-year-old Kihei man early Sunday morning in Wailea, Maui police said.

Police identified him as Kenneth J. Talbot III.

Talbot lost control of his Kawasaki motorcycle at 12:27 a.m. on a turn on Wailea Alanui Drive about a mile north of Kuakahi Street, police said.

The motorcycle struck a median and a tree. Talbot apparently was not wearing a helmet, and died at the scene, police said.

Speed, drugs and alcohol are being investigated as possible factors in the crash.

Eleven motorists have died on Maui roads this year, compared with nine at the same time last year.

Diver killed after being struck by boat

A 51-year-old man was killed Sunday morning when he apparently was run over by a tour boat in Kaumalapau Harbor in Lanai.

The man was reportedly free diving when he was struck by a Zodiac operated by a local tour company around 10:30 a.m., the Maui Fire Department said.

No one on the boat was reported injured.
