East-West Center exhibition will focus on Obama’s mother

President Barack Obama’s mother and her work will be the subject of a new exhibition at Hawaii’s East-West Center.

The Honolulu-based institution on Sunday will begin displaying numerous photographs and art from Stanley Ann Dunham’s field work in Indonesia.

Dunham, who died in 1995, was a center research fellow. The exhibition includes pictures taken by Dunham and artifacts from her own collection.

The East-West Center promotes cultural and technical interchanges between the United States and other nations in the Pacific, as well as providing scholarships for students from the Pacific region to study at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Her daughter — and Obama’s half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, will attend an opening reception for the exhibition Oct. 2.
