3 pedestrians seriously injured in North Shore hit-and-run accident

A 32-year-old Waipahu man is in police custody after a hit-and-run accident that sent 3 people to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday afternoon on the North Shore near a popular turtle-watching beach.

Police said a 63-year-old man, a 35-year-old man and a 31-woman-year-old woman were walking near Laniakea Beach at 2:53 p.m. when the driver veered off Kamehameha Highway, striking at least two of the pedestrians, before fleeing the scene.

Emergency Medical Services took the three victims to the hospital in serious condition.

Lifeguards were first on scene to tend to the victims until paramedics arrived.

Police located the alleged hit-and-run driver and arrested him on suspicion of three counts of accidental injury, driving under the influence and failing to stop and render aid.

The state put up concrete parking barriers across the street from Laniakea Beach last year in an effort to keep pedestrians from crossing the street in the area. The effort was aimed at improving pedestrian safety and reducing traffic backups as cars stop for pedestrians crossing the street.
