Kaiser head coach Arnold Martinez is stepping down 11 days after Kaiser announced it was forfeiting its season following an incident at the school.

Arnold Martinez is stepping down as head football coach at Kaiser.

The decision comes 11 days after Kaiser announced it was forfeiting its season following an incident at the school.

In a statement given to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser today, Martinez said, “Because of the hostile environment, I am formally resigning as head football coach for Kaiser High School. Although I will miss our players, I must prioritize. The emotional, mental and physical well-being of my wife and children are my highest priority.”

The Cougars played just one game this season due to low turnout and announced 11 days ago they were forfeiting the rest of the season after an incident at the school involving Martinez and a parent.

A meeting on Sept. 18 was scheduled to inform players and parents the Cougars would play their homecoming game against Moanalua on Sept. 22 at Kaiser Stadium.

That meeting never took place after an altercation at the school hours before in which police were called.

Kaiser principal Justin Mew announced the cancellation of the rest of the season the next day.

Martinez coached 11 seasons at Moanalua from 2003-13 and was Kaiser’s fifth coach since 2009.
