A major earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea this morning but poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
A major earthquake struck off the coast of Papua New Guinea this morning but poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The preliminary magnitude 7.5 temblor struck at 2:58 a.m. Hawaii time 27.5 miles southwest of Kokopo, East New Britain, Papua New Guinea at a depth of 6.21 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the earthquake. However, based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.
No serious injuries were immediately reported.
