Sumo still available on Oceanic

The decision by NHK of Japan not to air live broadcasts of the upcoming Nagoya Basho does not affect the tape-delay coverage for Oceanic Time Warner digital subscribers.

The Nippon Golden Network has 30-minute highlight summaries on NGN 2 (Ch. 678) twice daily during the current 15-day tournament. Times vary.

In addition, the hourly NHK English news on NGN4 (Ch. 682, HD 1682) has sumo highlights.

 

Amemiya honored by NFHS

Keith Amemiya, former Hawaii High School Athletic Association executive director, was one of 12 recipients of a National Federation of State High School Associations award Saturday in San Diego.

The award, which honors individuals who have made contributions to the NFHS, state high school associations, athletic director and coaching professions, was presented at the 91st NFHS summer meeting. Amemiya headed the HHSAA from 1998 to 2010.

 

Fund set up for Pearl City swimmer

Kamehameha Swim Club has established a fund to assist injured Pearl City High swimmer Daren Choi with medical expenses .

The 16-year-old two-time state champion suffered a traumatic spinal injury during a competition trip to Samoa last month. After competing in the Oceania Swimming Championships, Choi and his teammates were on a sightseeing trip when he fell 15 feet into shallow water.

Donations can be made to the KSC Friends of Daren Choi fund at all First Hawaiian Bank branches.

 

Vercruyssen medals on trampoline

Nani Vercruyssen won two medals in trampoline gymnastics at last month’s U.S. Elite Challenge in Virginia Beach, Va.

The 18-year-old freshman at Kapiolani Community College teamed with Shanelle Landry to take the gold in senior women’s synchronized trampoline, then finished second to Landry in individual trampoline. Vercruyssen was the only female chosen for the U.S. team that will compete at the World Cup in Spain this September.

Vercruyssen will compete in the Visa Gymnastics Championships in Hartford, Conn., next month as well as November’s World Championships in France.
