Krispy Kreme on Oahu? There’s a price to pay

Even if the Krispy Kreme folks do decide to open a store on Oahu, one question will remain outstanding: How much doughnut dough will remain in fundraising?

A lot of aficionados say that part of the business will drop off on Oahu, especially if the store is someplace centrally located.

The consensus: The pastries that come in the box are good, but they’re definitely second-best compared to the Kremes that come straight off the glazing conveyor belt, still hot from their dip in the deep-fryer.

One outfit that may be breathing a sigh of relief: interisland airlines. Oahu-bound boxes of the things have been crowding overhead bins since the Maui store opened in 2004.

Boy climbs to the top of all 50 states, for a friend

A 12-year-old Colorado boy has achieved his goal of scaling the highest point of every state in fewer than 50 days, topping it off at the 13,804-foot- high summit of Mauna Kea.

Backed by corporate sponsors, Matt Moniz climbed to raise money to help pay the medical bills of 10-year-old friend Ian Hess, who suffers from a disease that restricts blood flow to the lungs.

He began the venture on June 3 atop Alaska’s Mount McKinley (elevation 20,320 feet). Matt and his family are relaxing this week on Hawaii’s beaches.
