School board member leaving the party early

The leading contender for Head-Scratching Moment of the Week must be the resignation of Lei Ahu Isa from the school board — or, more precisely, the reason given for the departure.

Maybe it’s not so surprising that people will be jumping ship. Ahu Isa, pictured, said more resignations are expected.

But just to give the governor, as she put it, "a chance to appoint"? He’ll get many such chances. Meanwhile, the elected board will be doing its business short one person — or many, if the other resignations she predicted come through.

It’s unclear how that serves the public interest.

‘Active volcanoes’ on Maui

Maui has been ranked the most popular American destination in the world by a leading luxury travel network. The Big Island rated eighth, two places above Kauai; Oahu did not make the top 10 at all.

The rankings were made by Virtuoso, an organization of independent travel agencies, based on a survey of travel advisors. Ranked second to seventh, in order, were New York City, Las Vegas, Napa Valley, Orlando, San Francisco and the Colorado mountains. Miami South Beach was ninth.

More than 60 percent chose Maui for its whale watching, snorkeling, water skiing, golf courses, cruises and — yikes! — "active volcanoes." We hope that is not included in the members’ travel advice.
