New UH basketball coach doing something right

The success of the University of Hawaii’s first-year basketball coach Gib Arnold has not gone unnoticed. For the first time in six seasons, fans attending the games have averaged more than 4,000, and more than 6,500 roared from the stands in the Rainbow Warriors’ double overtime loss this past Saturday against Utah State.

The ‘Bows are averaging nearly 1,000 more fans per game than last season, reports the Star-Advertiser’s Ferd Lewis. At this rate, the team, so far notching 12 wins in 22 starts, will draw a sellout at Stan Sheriff Center if it keeps up its rebounding ways.

Perhaps new Target can stock a few Asian foods

The bull’s eye — er, Target — is on Kailua, now that Kaneohe Ranch has sold the property on Hahani Street, currently occupied by Don Quijote, to the big-box retailer.

It’s hard to see how the store’s vocal opposition can stop the project legally, the zoning being what it is.

But maybe a slight rejiggering of the traditional mainland-style inventory Target offers, to compensate for the departure of the Japan-based Don Quijote, would ease the pain. It’ll be interesting to see how much ahi poke, musubi and island tchotchkes are on the shelves when Target Kailua opens.
