Mead signs minor league contract

Kaimi Mead, the former Roosevelt and Hawaii Pacific star, signed a minor league free-agent contract with the Colorado Rockies last week.

Mead played two seasons in the Cleveland Indians organization and played last season with Maui Na Koa Ikaika of the independent Golden Baseball League.

The 2008 Pacific West Conference player and pitcher of the year, Mead went 7-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his final season with the Sea Warriors.

Hawaii Pacific denies BYU-Hawaii

Courtney Buster scored 15 points with 19 rebounds to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 77-69 women’s basketball victory over Brigham Young-Hawaii.

Jazzmin Awa-Williams had a game-high 18 points for the Sea Warriors (14-4, 8-1 Pacific West).

Erin Dastrup and Richelle Rieben scored 15 points apiece for the Seasiders (1-15, 0-7).

Seasiders, Silverswords in region poll

Brigham Young-Hawaii (10-3) jumped up two spots to No. 6 in the NCAA Division II men’s basketball West Region poll yesterday.

Chaminade (9-5) remained at No. 10 despite two losses last week.

Rainbow Wahine autograph session

The Hawaii softball team will hold an autograph session on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rainbowtique in Ward Center.

The whole team, including coach Bob Coolen and veteran standouts Kelly Majam, Jessica Iwata, Jenna Rodriquez, Melissa Gonzalez, Stephanie Ricketts and Kaia Parnaby, are expected to be there.

Miernicki sets course record

Oregon’s Daniel Miernicki fired a course-record 10-under 62 yesterday at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course to take a four-shot lead in Hawaii-Hilo’s Amer Ari Invitational golf tournament.

USC leads the team competition at 17-under 271, seven shots ahead of Georgia Tech and Oklahoma State.

TJ Kua of Hawaii is tied for 10th at 3-under 69.

UH’s Nainoa Calip (70) is tied for 21st, and Hawaii-Hilo’s Nick Matsushima (71) is tied for 31st.

The Vulcans (2-over 290) are tied for 15th, and the Rainbow Warriors (4-over 292) in 18th place out of 20 teams.
