This year’s Super Bowl was super delightful

Often after a Super Bowl the consensus is that the commercials were better than the game. This year it was a close call: Both the game and many of the commercials were great.

Packers fans especially enjoyed the game, while among the ads, highlights included the kitchen remodeler who changed the entire feel of the young couple’s kitchen simply by placing a bucket of Bud Light beer on the counter, and the little Darth Vader who finally manages to exert the power of The Force on his dad’s new Volkswagen. Rapper Eminem’s somber tribute to Detroit in the Chrysler ad also was hugely popular.

On the downside, the ads involving people getting hit by Pepsi Max cans made light of physical assault — although the same, crude slapstick concept seemed a lot funnier when it was comedienne Roseanne Barr getting hit by a log in the Snickers ad. Go figure!

In any case, we’re already looking forward to next year’s Super Bowl. Right after the Pro Bowl in Honolulu.

You, too, can be on a neighborhood board

Regardless of the unemployment rate, there’s one place that has a spot for everyone: the city’s neighborhood board system. Feb. 18 is the deadline to run for a seat on one of Oahu’s 36 advisory panels, a mail-in election to fill 439 seats.

In particular, Pearl City must be particularly eager to find candidates: Its board of 13 members currently has six vacancies. Of course, the fact that these are unpaid jobs doesn’t add to the allure.
