Man in wheelchair dies from burns in Pearl City fire
An 82-year-old man in a wheelchair who was burned in a small fire Tuesday died Wednesday at the hospital, police said.
The man was using an arc welder for a hobby project when the wheelchair caught fire on Upalu Street about 1:50 p.m. Tuesday in Pearl City, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
Neighbors were drawn out by the smell of smoke and put out the fire with garden hoses.
Paramedics took the man to the hospital in serious condition with burns. He died at 12:12 p.m. Wednesday, police said. The cause of his death was not immediately available.
Firefighters said sparks from the arc welder caused the wheelchair chair to catch fire.
