Do the words ‘overly sensitive’ apply here?
What’s there to say about the BeNiceBen.com website and related political brickbats flying since the fight between the mayoral front-runner, former Gov. Ben Cayetano, and U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye? Where to begin?
First of all, it’s evidence of how much the entire dynamic of electioneering has accelerated. Cayetano said push-polls done by pro-rail groups — tactics the groups deny using — amount to a "smear." Didn’t it once take until late summer before the S-word was even uttered?
And really, was Cayetano’s remark that Inouye is "out of touch" all that disrespectful, anyway? Candidates engaged in brawling across the country would have to figure Hawaii is the politically wimpiest state in the union.
Maybe that’s not such a bad distinction for a place that trumpets its aloha. But anyway, this episode has earned eye-rolls all around.
It was an amazing race that ended on Oahu
Hawaii fans of the CBS television show "The Amazing Race" got an extra treat Sunday night when they tuned in for the season finale: Not only was it a two-hour special to see which of three couples would win the $1 million prize, the finale was played out across Oahu.
So there they were, racing and flailing across town for the final hour — in challenges that included rappelling down the 45-story Waterfront Towers, paddle-boarding across a pond, and doing ulu maika (lawn bowling) after sledding head-first down a steep hill.
All in all, it was fun spotting the various isle venues. Oh, and the winners were Dave and Rachel Brown of Madison, Wis., who bested 10 other duos across five continents, nine countries and 22 cities.
