The driver of a pickup truck died in Hana after hitting a telephone pole at a high rate of speed, paramedics officials said.

Maui County paramedics were dispatched at 5:42 a.m. Sunday to mile post 47 along the Hana Highway and found the male driver ejected from the truck.

The driver, identified as John Krause, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His male passenger, believed to be in his 20s, was taken to Hana Airport and flown via Maui Medevac to Maui Memorial Medical Center with head and leg injuries, officials said.
