Tropical Storm Karina continues to weaken in Eastern Pacific

Tropical Storm Karina continues to weaken as it approaches the islands.
The National Hurricane Center said Saturday that as of 3 p.m. Hawaii time, Tropical Storm Karina is 500 miles west-southwest of Baja, California, and headed west at 5 to 10 mph. Its maximum sustained winds weakened to 45 mph as of 5 p.m., down substantially from its Category 1 hurricane strength of 75 mph 24 hours earlier.
Forecasters say that environmental conditions appear to be conducive for further development and a tropical depression is likely to form by the middle of next week.
The Central Pacific Hurricane Center is also issuing advisories for a weather system about 1,000 miles southeast of the Hilo, which forecasters say has a 60 percent chance of forming into a tropical cyclone within the next two days.
