UH’s King named first-team All-Big West
University of Hawaii senior Destiny King was named to the All-Big West women’s basketball first team today and Rainbow Wahine teammates Ashleigh Karaitiana and Megan Huff were named to the second team.
Huff, a sophomore forward, was also named the conference’s Best Sixth Player for the second straight season for her contributions off the bench.
King leads the Rainbow Wahine (19-10, 12-4 Big West) into this week’s Big West tournament with 10.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. She also leads the Wahine with 37 steals and is second on the team with 70 assists. She was an honorable mention pick last year.
“The maturation that young lady has had since the day she walked in as a freshman until today is tremendous. Could not be more proud of her,” UH coach Laura Beeman said on the Big West conference call today.
“The last half of conference she has been that general for us and she has a great support cast.”
Karaitiana made the all-conference second team for the second straight season. The senior averages 8.4 points while leading the Wahine with 70 assists and 34 3-pointers.

Huff is second on the team behind King with 9.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in 21.2 minutes per game, primarily off the bench. She repeated as the Big West’s top sixth player and UH kept the honor for the fourth straight season. Shawna-Lei Kuehu won the award in 2013, Karaitiana in 2014 and Huff the last two.
King was joined on the All-Big West first team by CSUN’s Channon Fluker, UC Davis’ Alyson Doherty, Long Beach State’s Raven Benton and UC Riverside’s Brittany Crain and Rejane Verin. Crain repeated as Big West Player of the Year.
UH will be the second seed in the Big West tournament and opens play on Friday against the highest remaining seed to survive the first two rounds. UH’s semifinal game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Hawaii time at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

Congratulations to the Wahina! Hard to believe Destiny King is a senior already. Time flies and she will be missed. Huff is an emerging talent. He height creates math-up problems alone, but her play is really improving. Good luck in the BW Tournament!
