Rainbows drop close game to Cal Poly

Cal Poly freshman Kyle Marinconz recorded the first four-hit game of his career and singled home the winning run with two outs in the eighth inning to give Cal Poly a 5-4 win over Hawaii tonight at Les Murakami Stadium.

Marinconz drove in Brett Binning, who scored when catcher Kekai Rios dropped the throw from the outfield. The tag would have gotten down in plenty of time, but instead the Mustangs (20-13, 3-2 Big West) evened the series at a game apiece.

Johnny Weeks had three hits and Eric Ramirez went 2-for-3 with two runs, two walks and an RBI for Hawaii (17-16, 6-2), which snapped a four-game winning streak and lost for just the fourth time in its last 15.

UH is now in a first-place tie in the Big West with Cal State Fullerton.

Lawrence Chew (0-2) allowed just the one run on two hits in four innings of relief to take the loss.

Hawaii starter Kyle Von Ruden was battered for eight hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings for his shortest start of the season.

Alex Fitchett had two hits and Jacob Sheldon-Collins doubled and scored to extend his hitting streak to nine games for the ‘Bows.

Justin Bruihl (1-2) picked up the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Starter Erich Uelmen gave up nine hits and four runs in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.

Hawaii had the tying run on second with one out in the ninth, but freshman Spencer Henderson got Sheldon-Collins to pop out to short and Marcus Doi to ground out to second to end it and earn the save.

The rubber game of the series is Sunday at 1:05.
