We had dinner at Lucky Belly in Chinatown, before the Narcissus Queen Pageant. They don’t serve dessert, so our waiter told us about a tiny shop, Wing Shave Ice and Ice Cream, a few doors away. Although there were many wacky homemade flavors, including li-hing mango and ube, we went with our old favorite, chocolate. This is a selfie of my husband, Daryl Fukunaga, and me.

Cheap Thai Eats

Steamed banana rice cakes go for a buck each. Add a crunchy green papaya salad for $5 and you’re all set to go. The rice cakes are neat parcels of sticky rice, banana, taro, and coconut milk wrapped in banana leaves. The sweetness of the coconut milk pairs well with the tangy papaya salad. This tasty and inexpensive meal can be found at the Windward Mall Farmer’s Market.
