Kitchen fire causes $30K damage to Moiliili apartment

Firefighters quickly extinguished a kitchen fire Tuesday afternoon at a Date Street apartment in Moiliili, and no one was injured.

The fire was caused by unattended cooking, and caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the structure and $2,000 to its contents, a fire official said.

A man was home at the time of the fire and managed to escape unharmed. He declined Red Cross assistance.

The Fire Department initially responded at 5:29 p.m. with nine companies and 35 personnel to 1919 Date St.

The first unit arrived at 5:33 p.m. and found smoke spewing from a ground-floor apartment.

The fire was found in the kitchen and was brought under control at 5:37 p.m.
