Florida State hands SandBows first loss of season

No. 5 Hawaii saw its program-best 9-0 start end today when falling to No. 4 Florida State 3-2 in the Outrigger Hawaii Invitational at Queen’s Beach.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-1) lost at the Nos 2, 3 and 5 flights to the Seminoles (7-3). Emily Maglio-Laurel Weaver at No. 3 and Norene Iosia-Hannah Zalopany at No. 4 lost their matches in straight sets while Ari Homayun-Carly Kan at No. 5 lost in three.

FSU had already clinched the dual win before Hawaii’s Morgan Martin-Mikayla Tucker picked up the final point with a three-set victory.

The SandBows also won at No. 2 with Nikki Taylor-Ka‘iwi Schucht holding on in three.

Earlier today, Hawaii swept Nebraska 5-0. In other matches today, No. 1 USC swept Nebraska, 5-0; No. 4 Florida State defeated Utah 4-1 and No. 6 Arizona, 3-2; and Arizona edged Nebraska 3-2.

The tournament continues Saturday with eight matches. Hawaii plays Utah at 10:30 a.m., Arizona at 1 p.m. and USC at 4:45 p.m.
