The Department of Parks and Recreation’s 45th Annual Seniors Valentine’s Dance drew a crowd to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall on Tuesday. Judy Yogi and Kazuo Tomasa represented the Japanese Cultural Club of the Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center.

Hawaii is the best state for well being for people 55 and older, according to a new study.

The inaugural Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, compiled in conjunction with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab, is based on self-reported data in more than 114,000 interviews with individuals 55 and older.

The interviews focused on researchers’ five elements of well-being, defined as purpose, social, financial, community, and physical.

“Understanding our aging population, including ‘Baby Boomers,’ the largest generation in our nation’s history, will be critical as we design policies and interventions to help older Americans thrive in all aspects of their lives,” said Joseph Coughlin, director and founder of AgeLab.

Montana ranked second, South Dakota was third, and Alaska and Iowa, respectively, filled out the top five.

West Virginia ranked last among the 50 states.
