Second missing bird returned to Honolulu Zoo

The Honolulu Zoo has found a second missing bird but is still searching for the third.

The buff-headed ground dove native to Saipan was found only about 500 feet from his cage. The zoo’s Mary Harbold said Thursday workers had been monitoring him for a few days trying to coax him back to his home.

Three birds escaped more than a week ago when vandals cut holes in 24 bird cages. No suspects have been arrested.

The zoo brought back an exotic parrot last weekend after hikers spotted it on Diamond Head Trail.

The third bird is still missing.

Zoo officials are urging anyone who thinks they may have seen it — a tawny frogmouth — to call them at 971-7174. She resembles an owl, and has a frog-like mouth.
