The alleged driver of a pickup truck that crashed and burned near Makua Cave in June 2013 is facing felony charges accusing him of causing the death of one of his passengers and then fleeing.

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday charging Kamealohanakekaiaulu Wilbur-Delima, 19, with negligent homicide and failing to remain at the scene of the accident to render aid. Zain Lalawai, 16, died in the June 15 crash.

State Circuit Judge Richard Perkins set Wilbur-Delima’s bail at $15,000.

Witnesses told police the truck was weaving and speeding as it traveled north on Farrington Highway then went off the road, hit a concrete piling and burst into flames.

Police said there were 12 occupants in the pickup — three in the front row of the crew cab, four in the second row and five in the truck bed.

City ambulance crews took three girls, ages 13, 14, and 15, and one boy, age 16, to a hospital in serious condition. Firefighters found Lalawai’s body after they put out the flames.
