Police investigate report of attack at Kauai park

LIHUE » The Kauai Police Department is looking for witnesses to substantiate a report of an attack on campers at Polihale State Park on the west side of the island.

Megan Wong of Kilauea told The Garden Island that her 20-year-old brother was part of a group of about 15 people who were attacked Sunday in the park after midnight.

The young men and women had set up tents and were playing music when about 30 adult men showed up at the park at the end of a 5-mile dirt road, she said.

The men told the people in the smaller group they would have to leave. They also said they were going to take what they wanted and stole camping equipment and bashed cars with baseball bats, Wong said.

"There were threats that they had guns waiting in the parking lot," she said. "They took pop-up tents, sound systems, generators, coolers and anything else from their trucks or pockets that they demanded."

Wong said the men left shouting, "Westside united!"

Kauai police reached the scene and found no victims, witnesses or evidence of a fight.

Most of the group left after the attack, Wong said.

A young woman recorded a clip of the fight early in the attack, she said. As it escalated, people ran away screaming and the clip ended.

Wong said her brother and others suffered injuries.

"I am trying to encourage them to say that something happened," she said.
