Lui Hokoana is expected to be named chancellor of the University of Hawaii-Maui College campus at next week’s Board of Regents meeting.

The board, which is meeting Thursday at the Maui campus, will take up a recommendation to appoint Hokoana to the post at a $152,016 annual salary, effective Dec. 1.

Hokoana has worked for UH for the past 23 years and currently serves as vice chancellor for student affairs at UH-West Oahu. 

He previously was associate vice president for student affairs for the UH system and vice chancellor of student affairs at Windward Community College.

He holds a doctorate of education degree from the University of Southern California. He earned a master’s degree in communications from UH-Manoa and an undergraduate degree in political science from UH-Hilo.

If approved, he would replace longtime Maui Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto, who is retiring at the end of this month.

Sakamoto has worked in the UH system for more than 40 years, and has been at the helm of the Maui campus since 1991. He earns $163,992 a year.

Other finalists for the job were Ricardo Maestas, special assistant to the chancellor of the Texas State University system; Jonathon McKee, vice chancellor of academic affairs at UH-Maui College; Michael Reiner, university fellow in the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost at City University of New York; and Jeffery Thomas, former dean of academic and student affairs at Miami Dade College’s Homestead Campus.
