Waimea Bay parking lot closed for 2 months

The parking lot at Waimea Bay Beach Park will be closed starting today for two months while it is being repaved.

Other improvements planned over the next 60 days include work on the parking lot curbs, ADA ramp to the sidewalk, installation of speed bumps, and restriping.

The project — part of Mayor Caldwell’s push to improve city infrastructure — was delayed in February because of the Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau surf contest,

While the parking lot is closed, the public will be able to access the bay through a designated pedestrian route to the beach, away from the construction site.

Two months? I’ve seen the Walmart parking lot re-surfaced overnight. And they can’t work on the other stuff with maybe half the lot open? Kills me how they throw public inconvenience under the bus to make it easier for the construction workers to sleep in peace for half the day.

Mr. Mayor: two months is excessive. check your costs. pay someone else to do the job because this is ridiculous!

This is what happens when the state is involved. The parking lot could be built from scratch in half the time, and probably for 1/10th the cost.

A few years ago, we stripped and re-surfaced our 200+ space main lot. The funding and planning process took quite a while but the actual job was completed in about 2.5 weeks and that included keeping ½ of the lot open and re-doing a couple of areas that were not acceptable. Doing curbs and handicapped access took a little longer but did not require closing the entire lot. Unless there are extenuating circumstances of which I’m not aware, two months seems excessive.
