2 escape blaze at Nanakuli duplex

Honolulu firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire at a duplex in Nanakuli this morning.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded with 11 units and 36 personnel to the 11:30 a.m. alarm at 87-1740 Farrington Highway. Smoke and flames were coming from one of the units of a single-story duplex home. A man and an infant in the home escaped uninjured.

The fire was brought under control shortly after noon and extinguished by 12:23 p.m.

HFD investigators concluded their investigation and have classified it as undetermined. Both units sustained heavy damage, with an estimated $200,000 in damage to the structure and $30,000 to the contents.

HFD determines cause of Makaha apartment fire

Fire investigators have concluded that the Makaha Surfside Apartments structure fire on Friday was intentionally set.

A 51-year-old woman was home at the time of the fire and was able to escape by jumping from her third-floor apartment lanai. Emergency Medical Services paramedics treated the woman for her injuries and took her to a hospital in serious condition. One additional person was also transported by EMS.

The Honolulu Fire Department responded to the two-alarm fire with nine units at 8:47 a.m. and brought the fire under control by 8:54 a.m. The fire was contained mostly to the bedroom of a third-floor unit and caused an estimated $112,000 in damage to the structure and its contents.

The case has been referred to the Honolulu Police Department.
