Pedestrian killed by drunk driver in Nanakuli crash identified
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a woman killed in a deadly pedestrian collision in Nanakuli last week as Alida L. Makanani, 65, of Kapolei.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Farrington Highway and Haleakala Avenue at about 9:15 p.m. Friday.
Police said a vehicle operated by a 36-year-old Kapolei woman was traveling east on the highway when she struck a woman later identified as Makanani.
The driver remained at the scene.
Makanani was taken in critical condition to a hospital where she later died.
Police said Makanani was in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision but was crossing the highway against a “do not walk” sign.
Police said alcohol on the part of the driver was a factor in the collision.
Police arrested her on suspicion of negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
This is the 47th traffic-related fatality on Oahu compared to 46 at the same time last year.
