A false bomb alert this morning has led to a gate closure at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after a military working dog responded to a contractor’s vehicle entering the base at the Halawa Gate.

Multiple agencies responded to the apparent threat, but a Navy press release said that “nothing of concern was found by (explosive ordinance disposal) personnel, and the scene was declared clear at 9:30 a.m.”

The vehicle drew the dog’s attention at 7:45 a.m. and base security initially closed all gates in response, but reopened all but the Halawa Gate at 8:08 a.m.

Base officials alerted all personnel to avoid the area while investigators, EOD and emergency personnel responded. The National Park Service also closed the Pearl Harbor National Memorial Visitor’s Center, including tour boats to the USS Arizona Memorial.

Honolulu Police Department units responded providing traffic control support along the Kamehameha Highway corridor while EOD, NCIS, and Federal Fire personnel worked in partnership with base security personnel during the investigation.

At 9:45 a.m. base social media accounts announced that the Halawa Gate had been re-opened.
