Maui firefighters continued to monitor and surround the Maalaea brush fire, which has grown to 6,200 acres.

The fire is 90 percent contained as of this morning, county spokeswoman Mahina Martin said.

Heavy equipment provided by Maui County and Hawaiian Cement was used to cut a firebreak mauka of the Kamehameha Golf Course after a flare-up yesterday afternoon in the area.

Honoapiilani Highway is open today, but the public can call an advisory line maintained by Maui Police for any information on road closures. That phone number is 986-1200.
