The Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo is hosting a gathering about miniature robots this weekend.

The Waiakea High School Robotics Club and the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium are organizing the 1st Hawaii International Micro Robot Conference and Tournament.

The event starts today and last through Monday.

Organizers hope to help Hawaii students develop the skills they’ll need to work in high-technology robotics.

Hawaii Space Grant Consortium Education Specialist Art Kimura says the Big Island could become a center for research in micro mechanisms.

He says the conference will give community leaders an opportunity to talk to industry experts and learn about the field.
