WAILUKU >> A Maui judge is deciding the case of a man charged with second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of his 19-year-old son.

The defense says 47-year-old Joe Antonio acted in self-defense when he shot Jose Antonio Jr. on Dec. 16, 2008.

Deputy Prosecutor Melinda Mendes said in closing arguments Thursday that the senior Antonio was angry with his son and acted deliberately. Antonio Jr. was shot five times.

According to witnesses, there were arguments and confrontations between the father and son in the hours before the shooting.

Circuit Judge Joel August will hand down the verdict in the nonjury trial.
