Indonesia plans dike to protect sinking capital

JAKARTA, Indonesia » Indonesia wants to build a huge dike to protect its sprawling capital from rising seas.

Jakarta Gov. Fauzi Bowo said Thursday that construction should be finished by 2025, though details of its exact size and cost will be hammered out during meetings next month.

Flooding in the city of 13 million kills dozens every year.

Indonesia, a former Dutch colony made up of more than 17,000 islands, is at risk of becoming one of the biggest victims of the rising seas accompanying global climate change.

Rising sea waters especially pose a threat to coastal cities such as Jakarta — which is sinking two inches per year, in part because pumping out underground water for irrigation and industry has eroded the city’s foundation.
