Maui police say speed and alcohol factors in fatal crash
Maui police say speed and alcohol were factors in a Monday crash that killed a 57-year-old woman in Hana.
Police said Ricky Johnson was driving toward Hana in a Jeep Wrangler on a straight portion of Hana Highway, east of Nahiku Road, when he crossed the oncoming lane of traffic and drove off the ocean side of the road. The Jeep dropped about 5 feet and overturned.
The woman did not have a seat belt on and was thrown from the Jeep. She was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center where she died at 6:25 p.m. Monday.
Her name is being withheld, pending notification of family.
Johnson, 39, was using his seat belt and was treated and released at Maui Memorial Medical Center. After his release, he was booked on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and released pending investigation.
Police said the roadway does not have guardrails in the area of the 3:42 p.m. crash. The speed limit is posted at 15 mph.
