S. Korea displays new missile at military ceremony

SEOUL, South Korea >> South Korea has displayed a domestically-built missile capable of hitting all parts of North Korea and other sophisticated weapons at the country’s biggest Armed Forces Day ceremony in a decade.

Tuesday’s televised ceremony at a military airport near Seoul involved about 11,000 troops, 190 weapons systems and other equipment and 120 aircraft.

Among the weapons featured was a Hyunmu-3 cruise missile with a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles), which South Korea has developed in recent years. It was the first time the missile was publicly shown.

President Park Geun-hye said in a speech that South Korea must bolster national defense to neutralize North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.

Later Tuesday, South Korea will conduct a military parade through Seoul streets for the first time since 2008.
