The Kauai County Council voted 6-1 Wednesday to approve a bill that provides a two-year deferral on the measure that would repeal an expedited permit process for structures damaged by Hurricane Iniki.

The Council’s vote on Bill 2502 gives developer Coco Palms Hui LLC more time to work with the county in hopes of restoring the long-shuttered Coco Palms Resort.

Councilman Gary Hooser was the lone dissenting vote on the bill.

Developers want to restore Coco Palms under the Iniki ordinance that helps expedite permits. The group intends to purchase the property from Maryland-based Petrie Ross Ventures and said it is confident it can secure financing and start construction.
