A large earthquake has struck in the South Pacific but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, officials said Tuesday evening.

The quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5, hit at 3:29 p.m. Wednesday near the epicenter (5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Hawaii), and was centered about 277 miles northwest of Raoul Island, New Zealand, at a depth of 295 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center on Oahu said the quake did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami and there is no threat to Hawaii.
