FBI arrests Waikiki man on fraud charges

A 34-year-old Waikiki man was arrested by the FBI this morning for obtaining credit cards in the names of 45 people whose identities he allegedly stole resulting in credit charges amounting to $100,000.

Steven Zubler was arrested at his apartment on Ala Moana Boulevard and will appear in Federal Court this afternoon before Judge Richard Puglisi.

In a 12-page the criminal complaint, the FBI said Zubler moved to Hawaii in 2011 and a year later began buying personal information from overseas individuals associated with hacking and selling of personal information. Using that information the suspect applied for credit cards and used the postal service to forward the credit cards to several mailboxes he controlled on Oahu.

The suspect then used the credit cards to buy groceries and clothing, eat at restaurants, and purchase precious metals and gift cards which he later resold.

If convicted, Zubler faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.
