Witnesses told police a Hilo man struck a vehicle and ran another vehicle off the road on Pilipaa Street before striking and severing an utility pole.

A 30-year-old Hilo man took a stolen tractor-trailor on a wild ride, hiting a vehicle, running another vehicle off the road, and knocking down a utility pole before hitting a house, police said.

The incident began before 7 p.m. Wednesday when the suspect allegedly took the tractor, trailer and its contents from a business on Makaala Street in Hilo and was seen driving through a closed gate.

Witnesses told police the suspect struck a vehicle and ran another vehicle off the road on Pilipaa Street before striking and severing a utility pole. The tractor and trailer continued south on Pilipaa Street and then ran off the street and struck a house.

Arriving officers found several people restraining the suspect as he was walking away from the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Officers arrested the man on suspicion of first-degree theft, fourth-degree theft, third-degree criminal property damage, an accident involving damage to a vehicle or property and two counts of first-degree reckless endangering.

Police closed Pilipaa Street between Puainako and Kahaopea streets for several hours Wednesday night because of the downed utility lines.

Detectives ask anyone who may have witnessed a white Freightliner and a white container trailer traveling through the industrial areas onto Kanoelehua Avenue, Puainako Avenue or Pilipaa Street in Hilo to call the police department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or contact Detective Dean Uyetake at 961-2379 dean.uyetake@hawaiicounty.gov.

Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

Under the circumstances reported…I mean stealing a tractor trailer for a joy ride? If it wasn’t so bizarre and potentially dangerous to innocents…it may be humorous. However, I would not be surprised this crime committed by a vagrant(s) and may be related to the perps who removed the spear from the Kamehamea statue and tossed it away in the brush. Too many strange things taking place on the Big Island…somewhat surreal…just saying.
