Off the News: Deadline looms for restaurant card

The last chance to make Hawaii Restaurant Card purchases is slated for 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, so we hope to see a flurry of takeout and dining-out activity at eateries across the state. Many recipients of the $500 prepaid dining debit card — sent in September to 150,000 people who secured unemployment insurance benefits — have yet to dine their way to a zero balance.

Cardholders can further the reach of culinary aloha by dining with a few full-fare-paying family or friends. Underwritten by federal CARES Act funds, any remaining balance will go toward replenishing the state’s tapped-out unemployment insurance trust fund.
