‘OCSports’ channel debuts Friday

Oceanic Time Warner Cable announced today that its so-called University of Hawaii channel will be known as “OCSports” and will debut on channel 12 Friday.

UH’s 7 p.m. non-conference soccer match against Washington State will be the first of what Oceanic said will be about 100 events to air in the channel’s 2011-2012 inaugural year. The channel will also include what the company described as other “locally relevant programming including live and repeat telecasts of UH sporting events.”

The first football game it will carry will be the Sept. 10 meeting at Washington.

High definition will be carried on channel 1012 while pay-per-view will remain on channel 255 and 1255 in HD.

Oceanic takes over production from its former partner of the past eight years, KFVE.

KFVE had done UH sports for 28 years.

The OCSports channel will be part of Oceanic’s basic package, officials said.

“Our OCSports services were designed to shine a bright light on University of Hawaii athletics and to help make those athletic programs fantastic local entertainment options in Hawaii,” Oceanic president Bob Barlow said today.
