Two men who jumped off a burning sailboat in waters about half-mile to a mile off the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel this afternoon appear to have suffered only minor injuries.

The two were picked up by a commercial vessel and brought to Kewalo Boat Harbor. Officials had planned to bring the boat, the Keaoleleana, to Ala Wai Boat Harbor but it sank.

Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said and the city Department of Emergency Services said the two sustained minor injuries.

Thw two men were the only people aboard the sailboat. At Kewalo Boat Harbor, one of the men told the Star-Advertiser, “I’m fine, I’m completely fine.”

Coast Guard crews were sent to the scene, said Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist Anthony L. Soto.

The Honolulu Fire Department first got the call at 1:37 p.m., Seelig said. Flames and thick black smoke were visible. The HFD fire boat shot water at the boat and the fire was reported under control at 2:20 p.m., he said.
