Honolulu fire rescue personnel came to aid of distressed hikers on three popular Oahu trails today, according to an Honolulu Fire Department release.

Around 10:40 a.m., firefighters were called to help a stricken hiker on the Diamond Head Crater Trail. The firefighters hiked to the woman’s location, assessed her condition, an escorted her off the trail. She was transferred to Emergency Medical Services paramedics at 11:22 p.m.

Just before 3 p.m., firefighters were sent to Koko Crater Trail to help a hiker who had fallen ill. The firefighters escorted the man off the trail and transferred him to  the care of paramedics around 3:40 p.m.

At about 4 p.m., rescue personnel were called to the Olomana Trail, where two hikers were stranded  on a ledge on the Maunawili side of the mountain.

The hikers told rescuers that they had hiked to Olomana’s third peak then took an unsanctioned path down toward Maunawili Valley, eventually reaching a ledge from which they could not proceed or return.

A rescue crew airlifted the man and woman off the ledge and to a safe landing zone around 5:30 p.m. Neither hiker was injured.

The three incidents, as well as two false alarms also involving hikers, resulted in HFD’s Air 1 helicopter being diverted from assisting in efforts to contain the 500-acre Yokohama Bay wildfire.
