Fire investigators are trying the determine the cause of a fire in a vacant home in Makiki Heights Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to a 7:37 a.m. alarm at 2045 Mott Smith Drive and extinguished a fire in a small portion of the vacant house, said Capt. Terry Seelig, the Fire Department spokesman. The fire was under control at 7:45 a.m.

Damage was estimated at $25,000 and was confined to one bedroom, Seelig said.

The six-bedroom house was built in 1952, according to city tax records.

Seelig said the home was scheduled to be renovated.

The house was located in small ravine and the structure was overgrowth by brush.

Police at the scene said the home had been recently sold and that it may have been used by squatters.
