Maui firefighters contained a brushfire in Maalaea that has burned 200 acres since Thursday afternoon.

Crews continued to monitor the area for flareups after the fire was declared contained at 5:55 p.m. Friday

The fire began just before 2 p.m. Thusday about a quarter mile south of Maalaea Harbor and moved up the mauka side of Honoapiilani Highway.

Most of the area is inaccessible by vehicles and difficult to reach on foot.

On Friday, the fire department’s Air 1 helicopter dropped water on hot spots around the perimeter.

A flare up at 10:30 a.m. Friday temporarily closed Honoapiilani Highway near mile marker 7, because of smoke crossing the

road and creating a hazard to motorists.
