Man killed in car-garbage truck collision in Hilo is identified

A 29-year-old Puna man who died April 12 from injuries sustained in a crash with a garbage truck in Hilo has been identified as Ryan W. Devaney.

Hawaii County police said Devaney was driving a 2001 four-door Lincoln sedan when he ran the red light on Kawailani Street sometime about 4:50 a.m.

A 2014 Peterbilt rubbish truck heading south on Kilauea Avenue struck the sedan.

Devaney was taken to Hilo Medical Center and was then flown in critical condition to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He died at 6:31 p.m.

The rubbish truck driver, a 35-year-old Pahoa man, was not injured.

Police have opened a negligent homicide investigation, and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This was the eighth traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year comapred with seven at the same time last year.
