Police arrest man who fled scene of fatal crash in Keaau
Hawaii County police arrested a 26-year-old Keaau man in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash in Keaau Sunday night.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Just after 8:40 p.m., police said a 2003 Mazda sedan was traveling south on Highway 130 when it rear-ended a 1990 Toyota pickup truck at the intersection of Shower Drive and Pohaku Drive, the department said in a news release.
When police arrived, they observed the truck engulfed in flames. Police Spokesman Maj. Sam Thomas said firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered the burned body of a man partially outside of the vehicle.
An autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. This is the 12th traffic-related fatality compared to 10 at the same time last year.
Police said the sedan driver fled on foot after the crash. Officers located him shortly after and arrested him on suspicion of negligent homicide, reckless driving, accident involving death or serious injury and driving under the influence of intoxicants.
