Moped rider and passenger seriously injured in McCully hit-and-run

A 19-year-old moped rider and her passenger were seriously injured in a hit-and-run in McCully Monday.

Honolulu police said a 2001 Ford pickup truck operated by an unknown male was traveling east on Kapiolani Boulevard and attempted to make a left turn onto Pumehana Street when the vehicle collided with a 2020 moped operated by a 19-year-old woman traveling west on Kapiolani Boulevard at about 7 p.m.

The moped rider and her passenger, a 19-year-old woman, were taken in serious condition to a hospital. Both were wearing helmets at the time of the collision.

Police said the pickup truck driver fled the scene.

Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. It’s unknown at this time whether alcohol or drugs were factors.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division at 808-723-3413.
