Police release suspect in Kalihi beating death

Police have released a 30-year-old man as detectives continue their investigation into the death of a 36-year-old man in Kalihi.

The suspect was released Monday afternoon pending further investigation after police arrested him a day earlier on suspicion of manslaughter and second-degree assault in connection with Macky Veniegas’ death.

Homicide Lt. Phillip Lavarias of the Honolulu Police Department said they are awaiting test results from the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office. Once they receive the results, the case will be presented to the prosecutor’s office.

The tests could take weeks, Lavarias said.

Veniegas of Kalihi died early Saturday after he was involved in a fight with an unknown male suspect on a public roadway in Kalihi. It’s unclear at this time what occurred prior to the altercation.

Police said Veniegas returned home after the fight when his condition worsened and he became unresponsive.

Police and Emergency Medical Services arrived at his residence sometime after midnight Saturday. Paramedics transported Veniegas to a hospital where he died shortly after his arrival.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to release the cause and manner of death due to the police investigation.
